I spent 23 years climbing to the top of corporate HR, finishing as a Fortune 500 SVP and Head of HR. I wasn't coaching from the outside, I was in the room where promotion decisions actually get made, watching who got tapped, who got passed over, and why.

Here's what I saw again and again: the person who got the promotion wasn't always the hardest worker or the most talented. It was the person that decision-makers already perceived as “ready now”. Most people never find out how they’re perceived at work so they never have the power to change it.
